Teacher Profile: Davey Hickey

Dave has been studying and performing west African percussion for the past 6 years.
After discovering a drum circle in St. Kilda on his first week in Australia, he was drawn to the sound of the Djembe and the obsession began!
Dave studied with traditional masters in Ghana in 2010 and continued his apprenticeship in Australia under the guidance of Simon Fraser, Mady Keita, Boubacar Gaye and Jeremy Prentice. Dave performs regularly in Oz and Ireland incorporating his love of African beats into myriad genres of music. He always brings his Irish charm, warmth and a sense of humor to his classes whilst still respecting the traditions and history of its origins.

About PSC

Want to take your playing to the next level? This is the class for you!

Our Performance Skills Class is focused on polishing a core set of rhythms to a performance standard. You’ll need to know your way around the djembe (being at the Intermediate level or above) and admission is via invitation and expression of interest. Classes don’t follow the standard blueprint. During our sessions we refresh, refine and reinvigorate a set of rhythms, work on new material and use other music techniques to grow your playing. The experience isn’t restricted to the studio – you’ll be given the chance to perform at community gigs and events, as part of our performance troupe Sessi Sessi!
